What Are the “Right” Decisions to Drive Strategy?

Last summer, I attended Gartner’s Program & Portfolio Management Summit in Baltimore, Maryland. It was a terrific event that brought together a wide variety of program and portfolio management (PPM) leaders across diverse industries, including one of our customers, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Charla Hodges, Director of Corporate Financial Operations & Portfolio Management at TVA, delivered an excellent presentation on how TVA is using Copperleaf C55™ to make complex trade-off decisions across the entire enterprise and drive the company’s strategic goals.

One of the key themes of the conference was the need for the Program Management Office (PMO) to move beyond simply managing the effective execution of their portfolios of projects, to driving the realization of the organization’s strategic objectives. While this topic was brought up frequently, what struck me was how Copperleaf™ stood alone in being able to provide an off-the-shelf solution today that helps organizations achieve this objective.

Gartner’s research talks about how the traditional PMO is evolving—from existing domain PMOs where IT is run as a business, to a digital business model with an established Enterprise PMO (EPMO) and a Strategy Realization Office (SRO). According to Gartner:

Digital business is altering the PMO role, requiring that PPM leaders change themselves to be effective enablers of strategic execution.

They must reinvent processes, embrace new ideas and enhance skill sets to support the evolving roles of the CIO and CxOs, or risk being left behind.

As shown in Figure 1 below, the activities and functions of the SRO are focused on integrated investment portfolio management, enterprise resource management and capacity planning, and adaptive planning, to drive the achievement of the organization’s strategy and business objectives:Gartner, How PMO and PPM Disciplines Will Change in the Digital Business.
